This dance was arranged from a manuscript dated 1793 found in the Newberry Library, Chicago and interpreted by Frances H. Jackson in 1941.

Earlier thay Year, a friend had been knocked down by a trolley car while crossing Beacon Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, Ty; event inspired the title of the dance. The slipping lines are the trolleys going up and down Beacon Street, the circle (a slipping circle originally; later revised by Rich to a walking circle) is the ambulance rushing to the scene; the half poussettes are the stretcher bearers; and the cast-and-lead figure represents coming out of the hospital. (The friend was only slightly bruised).

First Part Al All joining hands in a ring, lead in a double starting with the left foot (L, R, L, together), fall back (R, L, R, together); then, with hands still joined and facing the center of the ring, set (L, R) moving in slightly, and turn single left ending a bit outside the original ring, A2 That again, starting on the right foot and turning single to the right. A3 Men move to the center and meet, pause momentarily (a “poise point”); each turn to his own right; return to place and two-hand turn the left-hand woman. A4 Women do the same, turning partner at end. Second Part . Al Partners side-by-side by the right shoulder, moving forward starting on the left (or outer) foot (stepping forward L, R, L together, back R, L, R together); set to the left and right and turn single to the left. A2 Partners side-by-side by the left shoulder, moving forward on the right (or outer) foot (stepping forward R, L, R together and back L, R, L, together); set to the right and left and turn single to the right. A3 Men dance briskly to the left in front of the left-hand woman, behind opposite woman, and meet in middle with a poise point, then make a large turn single to the left into their original opposites place, acknowledging the woman as they stand beside her.
