Figure
Al 1-4 1s and 2s face up, 3s and 4s face down: all lead forward
(that is, up or down) for 2 waltz steps, cast back to place (2 steps)
to face partner;
5-8 Men give right hand to women’s left hand: all balance
forward and back and turn the woman under to change places
(“star through”): all are now facing the center of the set .
A2 1-8 4 changes of a progressive grand chain for 8, dancing 2
waltz steps per change (middles give right hand to neighbor on the
line to begin). End with the set inverted, with 1s and 3s improper.
B1 1-4 Partners facing, all cross passing right shoulder and stay
facing out (2 bars); give inside hand to neighbor and
wheel around to face in, men backing (2 bars);
5-8 Still facing partner, in fours, 2 changes of a circular hey
without hands, passing partner by the right shoulder to begin
(middles end facing neighbor up and down the line).
B2 1-4 Middles join hands and circle left halfway (2) flowing into a
two-hand turn halfway with partner (2), opening out to face the
ends while the ends turn partner two hands once around very
slowly (4);
5-8 In fours, circle left halfway, flowing into a two-hand turn halfway
and ending opening out to face up or down, ready to repeat the dance.
The progression is 2 - 4 - 1 - 3. The very last time through the dance Charles likes to have
the dancers face their partners and honor.
Tune called “Planxty Irwin”, (Colonel John Irwin),
