Phenomenal success of Henry Fielding’s novel The His- tory of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749), generally considered not only his finest novel, but one of the lasting masterworks of English literature. A mock- epic, tracing the comic and erotic episodes in the life of a good-hearted young man, it held up an affectionately critical mirror to the times; only Daniel Defoe and Samuel Richardson had comparable impact on the early novel.
