The Royal St. John's Regatta is the oldest annual sporting event in North America. Officially, it dates from 1818 although it is known that boat races were held before then. Crews are required to row down the pond (Quidi Vidi Lake), round their buoy at the bottom and return. Regatta Day, held in early August, is a civic holiday in St. St. John's and an occasion for a summer féte.
