“Daphne” appeared in the 1st edition of The Dancing Master and was reprinted through the 8th edition of 1690. The tune seems to have originated with an early 17th century ballad based on Ovid’s account of the god Apollo’s unsuccessful pursuit of the nymph Daphne, culminating in her mutation into the first laurel tree, the leaves of which Apollo used for the wreath that ever alter distinguished the poet. The tune rapidly became one of the most popular of the period.
