First Part.
A1  1–4  All lead up a double and fall back a double to places (r.s.).
    5–6  Partners change places (r.s.).
A2  1–4  All lead down a double and fall back a double to places (r.s.).
    5–6  As in A1.
B1  1–2	 M1 and W1 slip in front of M2 and W2 respectively.
    3–4	 M3 and W3 slip behind M2 and W2 respectively.
    5–8	 M1, followed by M2 and M3, casts off to his left and 
         moves round in a circle to his place; while 
         W1, followed by W2 and W3, casts off to her right 
         and does the same (skip?).
B2  1–2	 M3 and W3 slip in front of M2 and W2 respectively.
    3–4	 M1 and W1 slip behind M2 and W2 respectively.
    5–8	 M3, followed by M2 and M1, casts off to his right and 
         moves round in a circle to his place; while
         W3, followed by W2 and W1, casts off to her left

Second Part.

Third Part.
A1  1–4	 Partners arm with the right.
    5–6	 Partners change places (r.s.).
A2  1–4	 Partners arm with the left.
    5–6	 Partners change places (r.s.).
B1  1–2	 M1 man changes places with W2 (r.s.).
    3–4	 M2 changes places with W1 (r.s.).
    5–8	 M3 and W3 cross over and cast up to places of W1 and M1 
         respectively (skip?)
B2  1–2	 W3 changes places with M2 (r.s.).
    3–4	 W2 changes places with M3 (r.s.).
    5–8	 W1 and M1 cross over and cast up to places (skip?).

BI 1-2 Ist couple slip down and stand between 2nd couple, a facing in
   3-4 3rd couple slip up to stand outside 2nd couple.
   5-8 Ist man followed by 2nd and 3rd men, cast down to left in a small circle 
       track back to places
       while women cast down to right, skipping. 
B2 1-8 Repeat B1, 3rd couple slipping inside, Ist couple outside, 3rd man casting to right,
       3rd woman to left. 
       
Part II
Al 1-6 Partners side (1-4), then change places (5-6).
A2 1-6 Repeat Al.
BI 1-4 Taking hands along the sides, lines fall back a double, then forward a double,
   5-8 Each line circle three-hands around.
B2 1-8 Repeat Bl, circles facing out.


Part III
Al 1-6 Partners arm right (1-4), then change places (5-6).
A2 1-6 Partners arm left, then change places.
Bl 1-4 Ist man and 2nd woman change places (1-2), 2nd man and 
       Ist Woman change places (3. 4).
   5-8 3rd couple cross and move up outside to top of set, skipping 
       while 1st and 2nd couples move down,
B2 1-4 3rd woman and 2nd man change places. 3rd man and 2nd woman change places,
   5-8 Ist couple cross and move up outside to top of set, skipping while 
       2nd and. 3rd couples move down.

The Shepherd's Holiday. The alternate title “Labour in Vain” was also the name of an old tavern in England, whose sign was “illustrated by a woman with a Negro child in a tub, whom she is endeavouring to scour white” (Hackwood, 1909).
