Lady Simcoe was the famous and accomplished wife of Lord Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. She was active and involved in the “rough” colony. Mrs. Simcoe's diaries reveal that she brought a trunkload of ball gowns to Canada in anticipation of dancing. She was able to wear them at dances first in Quebec City, and later in Newark and elsewhere in Upper Canada.
