+ | The tune title is taken from a two-act dramatic pastoral opera called Thomas and Sally; or The Sailor’s Return by English composer Thomas Arne (with a libretto by Isaac Bickerstaff). The afterpiece was staged at Covent Garden in November, 1760, and was meant to be a rather short entertainment (it runs 50 minutes) given after a spoken play. "Thomas and Sally" is one of the few Arne works that survived a fire at Covent Garden in 1808, and it is occasionally revived. The melody was also included by Northumbrian musician William Vickers in his 1770 music manuscript collection.\\ | ||
