-Teaching Notes +
-Simple figures make this accessible for newer dancers, while attentiveness to the transitions rewards experienced ones. +
- +
-A. I think of the setting as slow, with initial side steps at the start of each bar, first to the right and then to the left. Variations are welcome. +
-B1. The circular hey begins with neighbors to provide newer dancers the assistance of different people as they learn the figure. The transition from the +
-last change of the hey into the star can be tricky suggest that dancers think +
-of that as a half left-shoulder gypsy so that the partner connection draws both of them into the star. Following the star, first corners turn left to face partner for the next figure. +
- +
-B2. Be attentive for dancers who initially misunderstand the "draw" as a poussette and try to make the progression happen here. Instead, first corners back up, drawing their partners out the side of the set to open up more space for the two hand turn, which goes once around in the normal direction and across the phrase. Second corners then draw their partners back into the set. Comparing this to a pousette seems to confuse rather than help. +
- +
-I avoid describing the final turn single as a clover leaf, as the 2s want to turn out sooner than the 1 s, and I like how that opens up more room for everyone, rather than insisting that everyone turn out at the same time. +
-Background +
- +
-For Cincinnati English dancer and caller **Debbie Hall**, who is a dear friend of many years. I initially thought to name the dance "Dear Debbie," but given the love we also share for shape note singing, the name of **Dave Wiesler**'s beautiful tune also works very nicely for the dance, and Debbie likes it best. +
